3262 Modernist Tapestry “Tempted by the Devil”
“Innocence Lost?” Here we see the virtuous maiden (the unicorn serves as a symbol of her innocence) being tempted by the devil. She instinctively looks into the mirror to see the truth (“mirrors never lie.”)
This is part of a group of modern tapestries that were produced after the second world war in Aubusson as part of a government program meant to re-energize the tapestry making workshops that remained in the area. The artist is not as yet been identified.
