These small rugs were made in the late 19th century were sometimes woven as a salesman’s tool so clients could order rugs made with some of the design elements or color combinations in the sample.  Some companies, such as Ziegler and company which produced rugs in Persia in the mid to late 19th century would also make samplers to show new weavers the quality they expect.
