3204 French Art Deco Rug Octagonal 15 ft x 15 ft

The unusual octagonal carpet features a central medallion depicting a running figure accompanied by two deer, presumably representing Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt.

The field is decorated with a simple geometric interpretation of a 16-branch star. The border is defined by bands of varying colors. Four colors are visible throughout the design: light beige, beige, brown, and dark brown.

Given its enormous size, the carpet was almost certainly a special commission. It may have been created for a prominent Hollywood figure, particularly since we acquired it in Los Angeles. Its exceptional scale and complex, angled design also suggest that it was produced by one of France’s most distinguished weaving workshops.
