Description

Very rare item that was most probably originally meant to cover a table.  This type of weaving was most popular in the late 17th century/early 18th century and often featured floral designs to bring the outside into the house.

In this case, the flower-patterned design is actually corralled into what almost looks like a formal garden.

This particular item is the oldest (16th century) example of this type of European weaving that we have come across.

The condition of this tapestry is excellent, especially for its age.  The borders, except for one, have been re-woven, probably in the late 18th century.
